Worldbuilding Wednesday: The Miramontes-Townsend Family

Hey guys! Look, it’s Nat writing this week’s WBW! I do still exist! Madness.

Now, the reason for my sudden reappearance is that the pages this week give me a unique chance to delve into the history of another prominent family in the JP universe — the Miramontes-Townsend family.

That’s right kids, we’re gonna learn about Keira’s parents, and what exactly Jo meant when she said that Keira’s mother hated superhumans!

Worldbuilding Wednesday: Inside the Ranks of the Outcasts

Hey all, welcome to another installment of the Jupiter Palladium Worldbuilding Wednesday! This week, we’re going to expand on a FAQ question asked by Lisalo:

“Why is the PJOs scale solely based on killing (does that mean hackers, smugglers, propagandists or the likaes get no chance of promotion?).”

The answer I wrote to this question ended up being too long, so … WBW it is!

Worldbuilding Wednesday: Superhero Histories: Ondine

Now that she’s been mentioned in the comic, I get to introduce yet another background historical superhuman in the United States: Ondine. She doesn’t get a lot of airtime in the pages—I mean, as much as I’d love for all of this to appear in the comic, that just ain’t gonna happen. So I hope you enjoy the expanded history of Ondine and Friends vs. Damien Voss in today’s Worldbuilding Wednesday!

WBW: What Syren Wore

KATE IS SAYING STUFF AGAIN, GUYS.

I say worldbuilding, but today is more characterbuilding.

 Or…wardrobebuilding.

As I’m sure you’ve figured out from the title (you astute creature, you) this particular one is focussing on Syren.

Syren is surprisingly practical – or at least, she thinks she is. Hence the pigtails in battle – does she want her hair getting in the way? Of course not! Has she worked out what she’s actually doing? …um, maybe not. Does she know she looks adorable with her hair in pigtails? You’re damn right she does.

Her dress is black mostly to hide any stains, and (although she may not particularly want to admit it) it helps her to hide in the shadows. And, to her, it’s comfortable. It’s something she feels confident in. Her shoes are – actually, her shoes are just cute.

When not in her “uniform” (spoiler alert – it’ll change in time. That dress’ll need a wash soon.) she tends to dress in a more colourful manner. You’re highly, highly unlikely to see her in trousers – she’s never really got along with them.

It’s also worth mentioning that she’s a girl from England, going to Florida. There’s quite a lot of difference in temperature. Whilst in England, Syren would lean towards long sleeves and layers. In Florida? Not so much.

I’ve put together a couple of Polyvore creations – one formal, one not so formal.

 So, the casual outfit:

Blue. Lots of blue. Syren is very fond of blues and purples. She is also a fan of sticking to one broad colour theme. Occasionally people have tried to introduce her to co-ordinating colours. She remains unconvinced. She’s been known to introduce a neutral, but that’s about as far as she goes.

Wedges! Wedges. Syren isn’t short, but she has perfected the art of walking in wedges and heels. She is very unwilling to lose this skill. She also enjoys spending time with tall people. And eye contact. Heels can be really helpful with this. (She will not be wearing anything other than flat shoes in battle situations. She’s painfully aware that she really doesn’t need to add to her own vulnerability.)

It’s also a cool outfit – she’s sure she’ll get used to the heat in time. But, for now…cotton, cotton, cotton.

And the formal:

 Purple this time. Told you.

It’s a fairly simple dress – there is elegance in simplicity and all that. Part of it is that Syren doesn’t want the dress to detract from her – she doesn’t want people looking at the detail in her dress when she can be charming them with her …charms.  It also still affords her the chance to fade into the background and at least attempt to be inconspicuous if she needs to.

She is fond of hearts – we’ve seen how much of a shipper she is… – and tends towards simple pendants as far as jewellery is concerned. The shoes are probably more interesting than the necklace – she’d paint her toes a suitable colour.

She isn’t very experimental with formal wear – she has an idea of how she wants to look, all dressed up, and attempts to execute this via simple combinations. Formal occasions are pretty much the only time she wears her hair up (since we all know pigtails don’t count) and when she wears more than basic make-up.

For a while, we won’t be seeing her - or anyone, actually - in a different outfit. Days are long and there are investigations to be done. And, in Syren’s case, adorable faces to be made…

I… I had to. I mean, I love pokemon. And Izzy loves pokemon. SO THEREFORE.
This is going through my head right now:

Dwayne: WHY DO I HAVE TO BE MISTY.
Izzy: Because you’re my trusty ginger sidekick.
Dwayne: Then make Angel Misty.
Izzy: What? No. That’s absurd. Angel can’t be my sidekick. She’s Angel.
Dwayne: But I hate water pokemon. Make me Gary.
Izzy: Jo is Gary.
Dwayne: Then switch me with Keira!
Izzy: No way, Keira’s an earth elemental, so therefore Brock.
Keira: I DON’T UNDERSTAND DDDDDDDDDDD:

POOR KEIRA IS SO GOSH DARN CONFUSED BY ALL THIS

I MEAN SHE LIKES POKEMON JUST FINE BUT IZZY IS SCARING HER

HELP :(

WBW: comics comics comics - wait, what?

KATE PRESENTS TO YOU:

Hey guys!

SO. This WBW, I have been mostly thinking…comics.

I know. So meta. So very very meta.

But what I’m really thinking is superhero comics (still o so meta) – in the JPverse.

Superheroes are – as I’m sure you’ve noticed – an integral part of our culture. Especially – as I really hope you’ve noticed – in comics. To get all pop-psychology on you, superheroes are escapism. Adventure. Fantasy.

Which gets trodden on when they’re a reality.

This is where I’m gonna come straight out and say that this is pretty much kicked into gear by me watching Watchmen. And this is where I’m gonna mention how much I want to do a very obvious joke but I’m going to resist it. Watching Watchmen lead to me Reading All The Watchmen Things! on Wikipedia and TV Tropes and the like. In the Watchmen universe, the superhero genre is somewhat replaced by pirates. (We quite like pirates. We played with pirates for a while until we realised we weren’t actually certain what pirates did.)

Apart from drinking rum and looking attractive. Which is something I try to do as regularly as possible. There may or may not be a plot to get Johnny Depp into as many WBWs aspossible.

This week I’m gonna do a brief foray into one particular genre that has really succeeded – in future weeks, we’ll be taking a peek at others that are especially prominent.  Of course, just like our world, all sorts of comics exist, but we’ll be focusing on the ones that are more popular/different.

 This week…COMICS…IN…SPAAACE!

(I tried to look for a picture to suitably illustrate space, but - well, ngl, my instinct was Doctor Who and now I’ve been distracted by pictures of Matt Smith and Arthur Darvill. So, here, have a picture of attractive people which doesn’t really add anything of value.)

They’re in a spacesuit…that counts, right?

Within the JPverse, due to accelerations within science (a subject we’ve touched on previously) the colonisation of other planets is slightly closer to becoming a reality. Space is just close enough to reality to feel like a potential escape route, and just far enough away to allow for fantasy. Space exploration and the idea of creating a new world have really taken off.  (I Am A Hoot.)

Along with the temptation of the unknown, there’s the idea that there’s the potential to create a new, better world. This is an idea that has universal appeal – for superhumans, there’s the hope of a world where powers don’t have to be hidden , for those who are anti-superhumans…well. You don’t need me to spell that out for you.

Generally speaking, sci-fi comics are more likely to be superhuman-positive, considerably more likely to have superhuman characters and, more to the point, to show them in a positive light. This is by no means true for all, of course – many a sci-fi comic has included a particularly nefarious superhuman as its overarching villain. With an awesome spaceship.

And, let’s face it, super-exciting alien races who can do all sorts of exciting things in all sorts of exciting ways. You know what I’m talking about.

Flower-arranging.

Worldbuilding Wednesday: The Preston Family

KELSEY SEZ

One of the things I like to use WBW most for these days is to expand on the details of characters we can’t fit into the comic. That’s why today I’m going to talk about the Preston Family Incident in a little more detail.

Worldbuilding Wednesday: Superhero Histories: Powerman

Hey guys! Welcome to an episode of “Ally is basically running her department since both of her bosses are out of town so is going to try to draw this WBW from pre-written materials!” I guess I’ll go ahead and apologize in advance, since the next six weeks are going to be living hell for me between work, potentially enormous cosplay projects, and not getting to play Mass Effect 3 due to all of the above (*SOBS*). If my posts are on the shorter side in coming weeks, you know why….

Truthfully, this is going to be the first in a series of highlighting Superheroes of Days Past in the JP Universe. I was inspired by what Kelsey wrote about for our last Worldbuilding Wednesday—er, Sunday—about secret identities and what it meant for superheroes. And I was like: “Well, we’ve officially touched on the idea that the JP aren’t the only ones out there, so why not expand on that concept?” That’s a piece of worldbuilding we’ve been doing on the side for some time now, after all, so I think it’s high time that we introduce you to some of the JP Universe’s iconic superheroes, starting with the first: Powerman.
